Golden Gavel Award!

Two of our club members, Matt and Amy, recently took part in Bargain Hunt on BBC 1 and with an outstanding performance making profit on every item purchased and auctioned off again were awarded golden gavels!

An entertaining episode to watch and the golden gavels could end up next to their Gosport and Fareham trophies from the 2019/20 season.

Club Spark booking for track and trace is still in place.

On entry:

  • Face masks to be worn in the club room / on entering (unless under 11)
  • Take your temperature (must be less than 38c)
  • 2 metres on social distancing.
  • Please use hand sanitizer available
  • Take equipment into the main hall

Please remember basic rules for play (bubbles not in place);

  • Table cleaning after play
  • Use a clean ball for each session
  • No picking up of another tables ball
  • No doubles play allowed
  • Please use well distanced chairs in the main hall when not playing

Hopefully we can stay on track to further release of measures on 21/6/21.

Phased Return

Following the successful re-opening of indoor sports facilities last Saturday 25 July, Table Tennis England is moving though the stages to return to competitive table tennis.

See Table Tennis England Coronavirus update.

As table tennis England moves towards stage 3 (see above link), on a local level things are moving at a slower pace. Full local league table tennis will not resume this year, some leagues are contemplating  2×2 short format, however the club are working hard behind the scenes to make sure preparation for return to club practice sessions is thorough and in line with all the guidelines and recommendations.

A big thank you to club members paying subscription fees throughout the lock down, the re investment of these funds is already taking place; as announced by email last week a number of top class new tables are being delivered to the club this week. All monies will obviously go into new equipment, so there is a lot to look forward to as the club returns to normal. Many thanks to Thornton’s Table Tennis, a long term friend of the club, who have given us an excellent deal on these (and will give members a very competitive discount for orders placed through the club).

The diagram below illustrates our proposed hall set up plans for the restart at “Table Tennis England stage 2 guidelines”.

Stage 2 – returning to club activity.

The set up will be put up and taken down each session by a small team of prearranged coaches and organisers. Bookings will be made via the new Club Spark system.

It is with deep sadness

It is with deep sadness that we let you know of the passing of Charlie Childs on Friday 27/3/20.

Charlie passed away at home having come out of hospital earlier in the week following his stroke in February.

The founder member of Generation 2 table tennis club in 1970, he leaves a very long legacy  to the club and table tennis in general.

Charlie served in many high level roles in several organisations including current roles as Non-Executive Director of Table Tennis England and Chairman of Governors at Fareham Academy. Until the middle of last year he was also heavily involved with British Para Table Tennis.

He was also a Level 3 TTE coach, where he had great success with many young players in the time I have been privileged to be a member of the club, with at least 3 I know of representing England in international competition and others being in England training camps.

Before this he had coached several other players to be very high level England players as well and I am sure there is more given his long association with table tennis. His personal drive to bring young people into table tennis and encourage others is something we have all witnessed and I am sure admired.

Charlie enjoyed a successful playing career himself, with a strong forehand game and tactically astute he was a tough competitor with many league and tournament trophies to his name.

We will keep you all informed of  how we will proceed to honour him in this the 50th year of the founding of Generation 2 Table Tennis club.
