National Junior and Cadet Championships

The Table Tennis England National Junior and cadet Championships was held at Huddersfield University over the weekend of 30th April and 1st May.
Only players ranked in the Top 32 of their age category were invited to compete in this tournament which made it a tough competition.
The Saturday saw the Junior events with Letitia McMullan in the same group as No3 seed Kate Cheer, with Amy Hutchins and Jasmine Wong.
A good 3-0 win against Amy saw Letitia off to a flying start. Next up was No 3 seed Kate Cheer who was also despatched 4-2.
A dip in performance and a loss 1-3 against youngster Jasmine Wong made for an interesting group with 3 players having 2 wins a piece.

Letitia came out as runner-up in the group and qualifying to the next round only to face No5 seed Charlotte Bardsley. A very consistent Charlotte ran out 4-1 winner.
Next up was Jonny McMullan who was one of the lowest ranked players in the Junior event. He found himself in a very strong group against the No7, 13 and 25 in England Juniors.
Good performances were still not enough and Jonny was out of the competition for the day.
Sunday saw another Generation 2 player, Vincent Cheung, join the Cadet event. He also found the going very tough and lost all his group matches with some good performances in his matches.
Jonny McMullan won all his group matches in the Cadet event with a tough match against No 10 seed Sam Chesterman. The last 16 round saw Jonny play No8 seed Joshua Weatherby in what was a very tightly fought match.
Jonny came out winner to set up a match against Shayan Siraj the number 3 seed in the quarter final. This match ran back and forth until Jonny ran out winner in the 6th set 4-2.
A match against No1 seed James Smith was his reward in the semi-final and the No1 seed was in good form winning 4-1 (11-8, 11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 11-9).
A good day for Jonny playing well and reaching the semi’s.
Letitia joined others in a test “Team” event at the championships  saw her pick up the gold medal as her very strong team triumphed.
